Pin Bhaba Pass Trek is rated as a Moderate-to-Difficult trek and is not recommended for absolute beginners. The trek involves crossing a pass at 16,105 ft with steep ascents and descents over 7 days covering approximately 51 km.
The best time for Pin Bhaba Pass Trek is from July to September. July and August offer lush green landscapes and wildflowers in the Kinnaur side, while September provides clearer skies and the beginning of autumn colors. The pass is typically snow-free during these months, making it safe for crossing.
Pin Bhaba Pass sits at an altitude of 16,105 feet (4,910 meters). The trek starts at Kafnu (8,275 ft) in Kinnaur and ends at Mudh village in Spiti Valley. The gradual altitude gain over 5 days helps with acclimatization before the final pass crossing on Day 5.
Pin Bhaba Pass Trek is considered Moderate-to-Difficult. It is more challenging than Hampta Pass or Kedarkantha, but slightly less demanding than Pin Parvati Pass. The main challenges include the steep ascent to the pass on Day 5, river crossings, and camping at high altitudes above 13,000 ft for multiple nights.
Kafnu is located in the Bhaba Valley of Kinnaur district, Himachal Pradesh. From Delhi, you can take an overnight Volvo bus from ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Rampur Bushahr (10-12 hours), then a local bus or taxi to Kafnu (3-4 hours). The nearest airport is Shimla (Jubbarhatti), and the nearest major railway station is Kalka.
Essential items include: 3-layer clothing system (base layer, insulating layer, waterproof jacket), sturdy trekking shoes with ankle support, a 40-60 litre backpack, sunscreen SPF 50+, sunglasses, lip balm, personal medication, water bottle, trekking poles, and a headlamp. We provide sleeping bags, tents, and all camping equipment.
Mobile network is available only at Kafnu (Day 1) and Mudh (Day 6). BSNL has the best coverage in these remote areas. Between Kafnu and Mudh, there is no mobile signal for approximately 4-5 days. We recommend informing your family about the no-network zone before starting the trek.
Pin Bhaba Pass (16,105 ft) and Pin Parvati Pass (17,457 ft) are both crossover treks into Spiti Valley, but differ significantly. Pin Bhaba is a 7-day trek from Kafnu rated Moderate-Difficult, while Pin Parvati is a 9-11 day trek from Kheerganga rated Difficult-Very Difficult. Pin Bhaba is the more accessible option and an excellent choice before attempting Pin Parvati.
